Chinese herbal medicine is as old as acupuncture therapy. Herbal medicine has been and continues to be the predominant (more popular than acupuncture) strategy of diagnosis and treatment in China. Today, more than 5,000 entries are contained in China's Materia Medica, and one million tons of herbs are used annually in China alone.

Herbs may be used synergistically for enhancing or maintaining the benefits of acupuncture. They are more commonly used as a sole treatment for various internal organ dysfunctions. Herbs are prescribed in the form of formula. An herbal formula typically consists of 5-15 herbs that are tailored to suit each individual's unique constitution and clinical manifestations. As the person's condition improves or the imbalance changes, the herbal formula is modified to establish further balance. Herbs have very few side effects when prescribed by qualified practitioners.
